Recent findings: Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Efficiency
-
🆕 We’re thrilled to share some groundbreaking insights from our latest research! 🆕
In a recent paper, it was found that graphitic carbon nitride GCN synthesized from urea under nitrogen exhibited exceptionally high reactivity for photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution that can exceed 21,903 µmol H2 h-1 g-1 when tested in a thin path flow reactor fitted with mixing patterns from Redeem Solar Technologies. This record high reactivity results from the combination of the increased flow velocity and light exposure by the flow reactor along with the weaker interplanar bonding and high surface area of GCN made from urea. GCN proved to be reactive for HER with visible light and to be stable for over 14 hours.
The provided guidance on the selection of the reactor design, catalyst precursor, synthesis temperature, and exfoliation based on the applied wavelength for HER paves the way to developing an energy-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production process.
Stay tuned for further insights in the upcoming peer-reviewed publication, where we dive deeper into optimizing reactor design, catalyst precursors, synthesis temperatures, and exfoliation strategies for an energy-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production process.

Nachhaltiger Wasserstoff für die Luftfahrt- und Weltraumindustrie? 🔋

🛩️ We were thrilled to present our hydrogen-for-aviation project at the Aviation Forum Austria hosted by the Federal Ministry of Climate Action!🛩️
This event offered a fantastic platform to explore the aviation sector’s growing interest in hydrogen, especially from OEMs, airlines, and airports.
With advancements in hydrogen-powered engines and fuel cells, we believe green hydrogen is essential to achieving a fully decarbonized aviation sector by 2050. However, keeping costs competitive remains crucial to making sustainable aviation accessible and viable in the long term.
At Redeem Solar Technologies, we shared the results from our Take Off feasibility project, completed alongside RHP group, Technische Universität Wien, and HyCentA Research GmbH. The project included a demonstration unit for photocatalytic hydrogen production, where we used operational data to create a techno-economic model estimating hydrogen’s capital and operational costs at different scales and locations.

Hydrogen is considered the energy source of the future, even though relevant obstacles still hinder its large-scale and sustainable production.
Photocatalytic reactors can address this problem by producing significant amounts of hydrogen in a sustainable and cost-efficient way. The Austrian company Redeem Solar Technologies, incubated in the ESA BIC Austria (Science Park Graz (SPG)) in collaboration with Brimatech Services GmbH, is engaged in the development of these innovative photocatalytic reactors capable of generating green hydrogen in space without relying on complicated supplies from Earth, in line with the European Space Agency - ESA’s and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU) approach.
As part of this project, Redeem will explore the feasibility of using its solar hydrogen reactor and catalyst technology to supply green hydrogen to the aerospace sector together with HyCentA Research GmbH, RHP group, and Technische Universität Wien.

Outstanding Results: Energy Return on Investment
-
📈 Outstanding results - EROI 📈
It is crucial to understand the environmental impact of green hydrogen production technologies to make an informed decision on which technology to use. The Energy return on investment (EROI) is a comparison of the cumulative energy demand (CED) required to build a hydrogen plant and the amount of renewable energy produced by it.
The photocatalytic reactor developed by Redeem produces in about 4 years the hydrogen needed to equal the energy employed in its production. This is less than a third of the time needed for the Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis technology used today to equal the energy consumed for its production. This shows the difference innovative material and equipment design can bring to the field of renewable energy.
Special thanks to FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency for funding this work.
Outstanding Results: Life Cycle Assessment
-
💯 Outstanding results 💯
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a vital tool for ensuring that renewable energy technologies are genuinely sustainable and provide net environmental benefits. It helps stakeholders make informed decisions, improve technology design, comply with regulations, and ultimately contribute to global sustainability goals.
🔺 LCA considers all stages of a product's life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. This provides a complete picture of the environmental impacts, including resource depletion, energy use, emissions, and waste generation.
🔺 LCA uncovers environmental impacts that may not be obvious during the use phase but are significant in other stages like manufacturing or disposal.
🔺 The photocatalytic reactor developed by Redeem has two significant advantages compared to standard PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis): it employs less PGM metals and demands no electricity supply during operations. This leads to lower emissions both during manufacturing and operations (3.17 kgCO2eq/kgH2 for Redeem vs 6.1 kgCO2eq/kgH2 for PEM.
